THE RISK IS REAL

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that worldwide, there are about 69 million traumatic brain injuries per year. Of those injuries, 56 million are considered mild and are classified as concussions. We know that the vast majority of those concussions are accidents that occur during everyday activities. While it’s difficult to pinpoint the exact percentage that take place during sports, it likely amounts to several million concussions per year. That number likely grows even higher when you factor in how many concussions go undiagnosed.
  • According to the World Health Organization, 2021 Though not fatal, approximately 37.3 million falls severe enough to require medical attention occur globally each year. Falls are responsible for over 38 million (disability-adjusted life years) lost each year.
  • According to Health Canada, preventable head injuries are a multi-billion dollar problem and $2,000,000,000 is spent to treat and support Canadians sustaining a head injury each year.
  • As many as 22% of all soccer injuries are concussions and another study suggests even higher numbers. There are also reports of the occurrence of acute SDH (ASDH), skull fractures and epidural hematoma (EDH) after being struck on the head by a soccer ball. J Engineering in Medicine 2015, Vol. 229(8) 592–608.
  • According to global statistics, seniors (aged 65 and older) experience the highest rate of head injuries compared to other age groups, with the most common cause being falls. Ageing Research Reviews Volume 99, August 2024, 102376
  • The rate of cheerleading concussions has been observed to increase significantly over time, with some studies indicating a rise of over 900% since 2000. Orthop J Sports Med. 2022 In Canada, CHIRPP 1993-2011 over 90% of acute curling injuries resulted from a fall, and 31.7% were head impacts.
  • According to the Canadian Hospitals Injury Reporting and Prevention Program (CHIRPP), a national injury surveillance database,
for curling injuries entered between 1993 and 2011 over 90% of acute curling injuries resulted from a fall, and 31.7% were head
    impacts.
  • Studies show a varied incidence of pediatric traumatic brain injuries (TBI) worldwide, ranging from 47 to 280 per 100,000 children. Falls are the most common cause of head injuries in toddlers, often occurring due to their developmental stage of learning to walk and crawl. PUB MED 2016
